Algae runs Liverpool’s airport
09/06/2009 United KingdomConscious of the damage aviation causes to the environment, the Liverpool John Lennon Airport has decided to go further in its steps to reduce that impact and will now create its own biofuel
In partnership with Origo Industries, the airport willinstall an Eco Box on its roof which will thus capture CO 2 exhaled by travellers in order to feed algae. These algae will then be treated and transformed into biofuel. This new measure is part of a global CSR policy applied by the airport and to positively affect the environment as well as staff and local communities. LJLA was the first airport in the UK to introduce wind turbines to generate part of its energy resources and to offer carbon compensation packages to passengers in partnership with Mersey Forest. The company is also working with transport partners in order to encourage its passengers to use public transport options. Airport staff are also requested to take part in sustainability initiatives, such as a March program where employees donated clothes for a hospice for infants.
