The Convention Centre Dublin gives a new meaning to the phrase ‘pint size’
27/04/2011
VIDEO With its imposing pint-featured glass façade (only in Ireland), the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) is already the new place to be in the city.
Designed by local architect Kevin Roche, it symbolizes the regeneration of Spencer Dock, on the banks of the Liffey river which crosses the city. 39,500 sqm, 9,500 tonnes of steel, 3.5 km of micro cables, 475 panes of glass of 500 kg each… An ambitious and large-scale project which will help the emerald isle to position on the worldwide business scene.
Recognised as the world’s first carbon neutral convention centre, and waiting for ISO 14001 accreditation, the CCD possesses 22 multi-functional rooms on 5 levels, equipped with state-of-the-art technical material, and including a 2,000 sqm forum. With its comprehensive packages and dedicated events and technical production managers, it has already attracted corporate as well as association clients totalling 90 booked events, such as the European Union Geriatric Medicine Society Conference. The official inaugural ceremony, composed of a gala dinner and a made in Ireland musical, is taking place today (7 th September).
There is no doubt that the CCD will boost the attractiveness of the Irish capital city, which has a busy airport with over 75 airlines flying to 200 destinations. A new passenger terminal was completed at the end of 2010, increasing the annual capacity to 35 million passengers.

Hotel wise, Dublin has 18,000 hotel rooms dispatched in varied establishments such as the prestigious Westin, the Four Seasons, The Merrion, The Dylan and last but not least The Clarence, owned by stars of U2, Bono and The Edge, and located in the vibrant Temple Bar district. Most of these hotels are in walking distance from the CCD and situated in the city centre where one can feel the influence of famous Irish writers like Joyce, Beckett or Yeats. They represent an ideal starting point to experience the Irish quality of welcome, to discover touristic spots including Dublin Castle, St Patrick’s Cathedral, National Gallery, Trinity College, or out of the city the Wicklow mountains and the scenic Howth harbour; as well as the warm atmosphere of its pubs and the sense of fun of the Irish people, or the “craic” in Gaelic.
