Tokyo: where culture meets technology

15/03/2010 Hotel New O Tani

A global business hub and gateway to Asia, Tokyo is also Asia’s fashion and entertainment epicentre.

Known for its modern architecture and its cutting-edge innovations, the metropolis is the crossroads of 400 years of history where old temples surrounded by skyscrapers can be found. Bursting with numerous and varied venues, the city is a paradise for meetings and events planners. The largest international conference centre in central Tokyo is the Tokyo International Forum, a structure which was built around a sleek glass atrium, and composed of 8 halls, 34 multi-purpose conference rooms as well as a 5,012-seat theatre. In Tokyo Bay area, the city also boasts Japan’s largest exhibition and convention centre which offers 80 000 sq m of exhibition space and 22 meeting rooms. In the Roppongi Academy Hills conference centre (500 delegates), meetings are held at 200 m above the streets of Tokyo in a complex which features the Grand Hyatt Tokyo (389 guestrooms), art galleries, cinemas, more than 200 shops and a Japanese garden. Large conventions can also be held in the Nippon Budokan, the national focal point and spiritual home of Japan’s traditional martial art or in the Kokugikan Studio Stadium, a 1, 600 sq m arena which houses sumo competitions. On the hotel side, the destination offers an impressive 89 000 hotel rooms including the Imperial Hotel (931 guestrooms and 17 restaurants), which is an institution in the city since its opening in 1890 and personifies grace and hospitality with its 1920s decorative motifs. In contrast, the Hotel New O Tani is a real city within the city and is surrounded by 40, 000 sq m of Japanese gardens like in the Happo-en, one of the most beautiful hotels. Its 400 year old garden comprises 14 versatile banquet halls (up to 800 guests). The temples are also representative of Japanese culture such as the Chokokuji Temple, home of the 30 ascetic monks, which invites visitors to discover Zen meditation. For original events, the Hakuko-kan annex is a 240 sq m Japanese tatami banquet hall, the largest of its kind in Tokyo.
